As'saafa Hotel
Located within walking distance of Al Masjid an Nabawi in Al Madinah, Saudi Arabia, As’saafa Hotel draws its identity from the architecture, pathways and material character of the city. The project reinterprets familiar elements of Al Madinah—promenades, arcades, vaults, niches, patterns and ornamental details—within a contemporary hospitality environment.
The transformation begins at the ground-floor lobby, where the existing space was narrow and fragmented. By removing unnecessary walls, steps and level changes, and using the existing structural columns to establish a new spatial grid, the lobby becomes a more open and legible sequence of spaces. A concept store for locally made products, waiting area, reception, bar and lounge are organized as distinct yet interconnected zones.
This organization introduces the idea of an architectural promenade through a sequence of walkways and arcades. Vaults are reinterpreted as divided, communicating forms, while recessed seating creates contemporary niches inspired by the spatial character of historic Al Madinah. A similar architectural language extends into the restaurant.
The guestrooms are designed to accommodate between two and four guests, responding to the particular patterns of travel associated with pilgrimage to the city. Here, references to place become more subtle, expressed through material, texture, pattern and detail rather than literal reproduction.
A restrained palette of concrete, terrazzo, timber, gunmetal, linen, Carrara marble, ribbed white wood and brass establishes an earthy and tactile atmosphere. Patterns derived from Al Madinah appear across screens, flooring, fabrics and furniture. In the guestrooms, these motifs are abstracted into a carpet gradient that is strongest at the entrance and gradually dissolves toward the interior.
Furniture and lighting follow the same approach. Loose contemporary pieces in timber, linen, metal and concrete create a flexible environment while maintaining the calm and modest character of the spaces.
Rather than reproducing historical forms, As’saafa Hotel translates the spatial qualities, materials and patterns of Al Madinah into a contemporary hospitality experience—creating an architecture rooted in the identity of its place.
